The system of educating and socializing children and teenagers always depends on the socio-cultural organization of society as a whole. The research interest of this paper is focused on the link between education and socio-historical characteristics of society. History and ethnology represent us wide variety of the types, institutions and subjects of socialization. However, we can distinguish two main strategies of socialization: consecration and education. Consecration shapes the child as a personality, dealing with the motives and senses of the neophytes and their understanding of things. Education imparts rational knowledge and teaches skills. Both are reflected in social institutions such as schools and initiation ceremonies. Initiation practices help people to become a part of social groups, and are characteristic of ancient cultures. They are also linked to the formation of memories in non-literate societies and the oral transmission of knowledge. School enlightens and educates; it is the central institution where socialization takes place in complex educated societies, and where rational knowledge are valued most highly. In post-industrial societies, neither of these strategies is effective, due to their unpredictability in a rapidly changing world. Initiation strategies are too rigid and burdensome. Educational strategies overload pupils with unclaimed knowledge and impart too much knowledge that has little real-world application. In this paper, I survey the educational requirements imposed by contemporary society and outline the features of a new foundational socialization strategy.
