Homelessness is one of the acute problems of the modern metropolis. At the individual level it is associated with the experience of traumatization, strong destructive anxieties and experiences of uselessness, defenselessness, abandonment, loss of one’s home, place, aspects of one’s self, transformation of one’s identity. Prevention of homelessness is complex because its causes include a complex set of structural, institutional, interpersonal and individual factors, as well as due to the marginalization of the category of homeless people. The prevailing approach today is the organization of emergency, urgent measures to meet basic needs (food, drink, laundry, clothing). The Social Support Center of the “Friends of the Community of St. Egidius” develops a different, holistic approach to the organization of assistance to homeless people, based on the principle of relationship, communication between people, respect and recognition of the value of a person regardless of his social status and material capabilities. The article presents the experience of the Center, considered through the prism of psychological and psychoanalytic literature. The article discusses what aspects of social and psychological assistance can make it effective. The understanding of the helping community and the Center is considered from the point of view of W. Bion’s model of “container and contained”, where the process of containerization helps a homeless person to restore his own internal good object.
