Cléopâtre Athanassiou-Popesco, basing on the analysis of the child’s identity development, examines in her book the formation of mental representations by analogy with a theatrical metaphor: firstly, from the point of view of creating the inner theater itself, and secondly, from the point of view of the play that unfolds on the inner stage of the psyche. The author of the book relies on the works of Z. Freud, M. Klein, E. Bick, A.-M. Fontaine on the formation of inner mental space. The development of representations is considered in the paradigm of object relations. This view may be of interest not only to practicing psychologists, but also to researchers of cognitive development of the child, social perception and interpersonal interaction, empathy and other mental functions and phenomena. The book reveals the most complex internal mechanisms of forming ideas about oneself and others in connection with the fundamental processes of separation, loss of concreteness of the object, the formation of internal supporting objects associated with the need to recognize and reject that the object is not part of it, that representation will never become a real object. Three parts of the book are devoted to the problems of the development of representations in a child and the connection of this process with the perception of the image of the “I” and the other in the mirror, the analysis of psychoanalytic studies of the mirror and reflection processes, and the consideration of the image of the mirror in myths and art.
